PLANTING SYSTEMS AND SPACING

Blackberry is planted from October to April, most commonly in autumn and early spring. Autumn planting is recommended in warmer areas, while spring planting is recommended in colder areas where the soil gets frozen during wintertime. Roots should be submerged into water for 24 hours and then shortened for a ¼ of their length before planting. Damaged roots should be removed completely. After that, they are submerged in a mixture of manure and loam. The most commonly used training systems in blackberry cultivation are:

  • Bush system with a square spacing of 1,5 x 2,0 m, depending on the variety vigour. This system is applied on smaller surfaces.

  • Bush system with a rectangular spacing of 2,5 - 3,0 m x 1,20 - 2,0 m, depending on the variety, vigour, and processing manner.

  • Hedge system (trellis) where the spacing is 2,50 - 3,0 m x 0,80 - 1,20 m. This is the best system when it comes to red with a height of 2,20 - 2,40 m, and a width of 8-10 centimeters are most commonly used as trellis support.
